Dental Implants
Why Dental Implants?
Dental Implants represent an aesthetic and medically sound alternative to bridges and traditional prosthetics. They have the advantage of looking like real teeth, and because decay cannot destroy them, they have the durability to last a lifetime. That is why they offer unprecedented comfort, security and reliability compared to traditional treatments. No other treatment alternatives have proven to be as functionally effective and natural as implants, and they are among the most successful procedures in dentistry. For over four decades, dental implants continue to improve the quality of life for their users.
What is a Dental Implant?
A natural tooth consists of a crown (the part you see above the gum), and the root (the part hidden under the gum, within the jawbone). It is the root that holds the natural tooth in place. A dental implant is a surgical placement of a titanium post into the jaw instead of the natural missing root.
What are the advantages of Dental Implants?
When natural teeth are absent, many problems occur. The remaining teeth shift, rotate and become crooked. The opposing teeth begin to hyper erupt and drift into the open space causing bite-relationship problems. As soon as a tooth is lost, the supporting bone in the jaw begins to dissolve. The longer the tooth is missing, the greater the bone loss. This can trigger a recession of the jaw and change the face’s structure.

In the long run, dental implants are a better alternative than bridges because they do not put our healthy natural teeth in peril by using them to replace one or more adjacent teeth.
Once in place, dental implants have no risk of deviation or movement. Problems linked to prosthetics such as bad adjustment, gum irritation and pain from exposed nerves are eliminated. Superior comfort, greater reliability, and an overall sense of liberty are hence achieved. Additionally, implants can be used in conjunction with other restorative procedures for maximum effectiveness. For example, an implant can serve as an anchor for a dental bridge or as a replacement for missing back teeth needed for a bridge. Implants can also be used with dentures to increase stability and reduce gum tissue irritation.
How does a Dental Implant procedure work?
The procedure consists of several steps. After a consultation with the dentist and a complete oral
examination, you will begin with a scan of your mouth taken by a radiology specialist that is recorded to CD.
The image obtained gives us the exact information for the planning and positioning of your future implants in a 3D environment.
This will also show the dentist if a bone graft would be necessary. The success of a dental implant is dependent upon the availability of bone in the site where the implant is being placed. Replacing missing bone or adding to existing bone is sometimes required before actually starting the placement of a dental implant. Surgical placement of a titanium post is put into either the upper or lower jaw bone. Titanium is used because it is biocompatible (the body does not recognize titanium as a foreign substance). There is then a period of approximately four months for osseo-integration.
That is the fusing of the bone of the jaw to the implanted post. Next there is a minor surgical exposure of the top of the implant to attach a post that becomes the support for either one tooth or a set of teeth. The final step is restorative. Impressions are taken to make a prosthesis that will attach to the implants. They are virtually indistinguishable from natural teeth, and require the same maintenance such as brushing, flossing, and regular dental check-ups.
As our life span has been increasing, the need for some type of highly functional and permanent dental replacement system has become increasingly important. Dental implants can greatly enhance both your dental health and self-confidence and allow you to enjoy your meals to the fullest extent.
